Buying from Instagram checkout

Instagram checkout is only available through the mobile app and not on a computer.

Instagram checkout allows you to buy featured items from a brand without leaving Instagram. To use Instagram checkout, tap the in the top tab on a profile of a participating brand from your mobile device.

Items you buy from Instagram checkout are covered by our purchase protection.

Instagram checkout is only available on posts showing a and Checkout on Instagram or Add to Bag on the checkout page.

Note that product detail pages showing View on Website are part of Instagram Shopping and not Instagram checkout. Learn the difference between Instagram checkout and Instagram Shopping.

To buy something through Instagram checkout:
  1. Tap any post with a to reveal the item name and price.
  2. Tap any price tag to see the product detail page and if Instagram checkout is available.
  3. You may need to select specifications for your purchase (example: color, size).
  4. Tap Checkout on Instagram or Add to Bag.
  5. Tap Proceed to Checkout once you’re ready.
  6. Enter your Delivery Address then tap Next.
  7. Enter your Payment Method.
  8. Review your order details then tap Place Order.

Note: If you’re entering your address for the first time, you must first enter an address that matches the address on your payment method. To ship to a different address, you can always add an additional delivery address.

Once you place your order, you'll see the option to create a PIN for easy and secure checkouts on future orders.

Ways to buy through Instagram checkout

You might see different ways to buy something through Instagram checkout. They might appear as posts or stories from the brands or people you follow, or from an ad.

Swipe to shop

On posts and stories available, some brands feature a swipe feature that directly takes you to a checkout page, where you can view more product details, specifications, and pricing. Once you're ready to check out, you can follow the checkout instructions to complete your purchase.

Product launches

Brands or people you follow may post about upcoming product launches for purchase through Instagram checkout. When you see a post or Story, you can Set a Reminder and get notified 24 hours and also 15 minutes before the product launches.

When the product launches, you can checkout without leaving Instagram. You can add your delivery and payment information before the product is launched to get ready for checkout as products can sometimes sell out quickly.

You can use a credit or debit card or a PayPal account to buy products through Instagram checkout on posts showing both a and Checkout on Instagram or Add to Bag on the product detail page.

We accept credit and debit cards from:

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • American Express
  • Discover

Please note that prepaid debit cards are not accepted at this time. Learn how to add or remove a payment method from your Instagram account.

Orders and Returns

This is only about posts you see on Instagram that show a and a Checkout on Instagram option.

When you buy something through Instagram checkout, we'll send you an order notification through the app and a confirmation to the email you entered at checkout. You can also find your order confirmation in your Orders.

To view your order confirmation on Instagram:

  1. Tap .
  2. Tap .
  3. Tap Orders.

You can also tap any order to review order confirmation and details.

You can cancel or return the order, or get help from the merchant or Instagram through the email confirmation or in your Orders. Please note you won't be able to return items marked as a final purchase on the product detail page.

You can only track orders through the Instagram app. Order tracking on a computer is not available at this time.

You can track orders you made through Instagram checkout. We also send you notifications through email and the app if the status of your order has changed.

To track your order through Instagram:

  1. Tap .
  2. Tap .
  3. Tap Orders.
  4. Tap the order you want to track.
  5. In your Order Details, you can see the shipping carrier (example: USPS, FedEx) and copy the tracking number to track it on the carrier's site.

To return something you purchased through Instagram checkout:

  1. Tap profile.
  2. Tap .
  3. Tap Orders.
  4. Tap the order and item you want to return.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the return process.

You can only return items through Instagram when you buy through Instagram checkout. Learn the difference between checkout and Shopping.

If you don't see the item in your Orders, please contact the merchant directly for help.

Note: For orders with multiple items, you’ll need to request a return for each item separately.

Returns through Instagram checkout

  • 30 day returns: Unless the item is final sale, you can return your order at least 30 days after the order is delivered. You can see if something is final sale by looking for Final Sale in the product description and at checkout.
  • Return shipping costs: Buyers usually cover the shipping costs of returns, unless the return is covered by Purchase Protection.
  • Merchant policies: Each merchant has their own return policy, but all merchants accept returns for a minimum of 30 days (except for final sale items). You can see the specific return policy for a product on the order confirmation.

You can only cancel an order within 30 minutes of your purchase.

You can cancel most purchases made through Instagram checkout up to 30 minutes after the purchase was placed.

To cancel your order:

  1. Go to your Orders.
  2. Tap the order you want to cancel.
  3. Scroll down and tap Cancellations.
  4. Select a reason and tap Cancel Order.

Note: If the order has more than one item, cancelling one item will cancel the whole order.

I can't cancel my order

If it's too late to cancel your order, you may be able to return it within 30 days of the purchase, where available. Learn how to get help with your order.

Contact the merchant for help: After your first message to the business, they have 2 business days to reply to your message and resolve the issue.

Contact Instagram for help: If the business doesn't reply or resolve the issue within 2 business days, please let us know.

  • Your order didn't arrive: We recommend waiting 2 days after the estimated delivery date in your order history. On the third business day, you can get help with your order.
  • The product is damaged or it doesn't match the description: If the shipment you received is damaged, not what you expected, you can get help with your order.
  • You didn't make this purchase: If you see an unauthorized purchase in your order history, please follow these steps.

Change Account Settings

To add or remove a payment method on Instagram:

  1. Tap .
  2. Tap .
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Payments then tap Payment Methods.
  5. In Payment Methods click Credit or Debit Card to add a new card. Tap PayPal to add a PayPal account.

To remove a payment method, select the card you want to remove and tap Remove.

If you have additional questions or continue experiencing issues adding or removing your payment method please let us know.

Note: we don't support RuPay or the Maestro card network.

If you made a purchase within 30 minutes and need to change your delivery address, you'll need to first cancel the order. If you no longer have the option to cancel your order and it hasn't yet shipped, you may be able to contact the merchant for further assistance.

When you're at checkout, you'll be able to add a new delivery address or update your current one as you scroll down to Delivery. You can also update your delivery address for future purchases.

To update your delivery address for future orders:

  1. Tap your profile.
  2. Tap .
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Payments and select Delivery Info.
  5. Tap your current delivery address to update or select Add Delivery Info to add a new one.
  6. Tap Done.

You can select to set your new address as the default address for future orders.

Privacy and Security

When a merchant receives an order confirmation, they are provided with the buyer's name, address, phone number, and email, so they can complete your order.

Keep in mind that:

  • We use encryption to protect your payments and keep your credentials secure. Learn how we protect your payment information.
  • No one can see your whole credit card number or PayPal password on Instagram after you enter it, even with your password.
  • We never share your payment information with merchants or other people on Instagram, and payment info doesn’t show up on your public profile. In fact, we don’t even share your full info with those you’re paying.
