Privacy and safety in Instagram channels
Channels, unlike your Instagram group chats, are:
  • Discoverable by anyone on Instagram.
  • Managed by an admin that has the ability to moderate them when there’s an interaction or end the channel.
  • Not currently supporting end-to-end encryption.
Channels Privacy and Safety
Keep in mind that channels on Instagram:
Privacy and access
  • Are not private because they can be found and seen by people not in the channel, including Meta.
  • May be found linked in a channel creator’s profile or accessed from Instagram stories when added as a sticker.
  • Can be located using search from your inbox (iPhone).
  • Can allow a larger number of people to join broadcast channels.
Safety
  • Are subject to additional review processes. When something goes against the Instagram Community Guidelines, Meta has policy enforcement systems in place to respond. We have tools and reviewers to help us identify, review or remove content that may violate our Community Guidelines – often before anyone sees it. Learn more about our content review process.
  • Require that the paid partnership tool be used to indicate when a commercial relationship has influenced a message. See more about Meta’s branded content policy.
  • Can include someone you have blocked. Blocking someone stops the blocked profile from contacting you individually, but it does not block that profile from a channel that you are both in. If you and the profile you block are in a channel together, you’ll be notified before you enter the channel.
Channel history and retention
  • May record or process information such as the content, when a message was sent, received, or read, and other interactions with the content in order to provide and improve the channels product and your experience, as explained in our Privacy Policy.
  • Will include your activity, such as the content you have sent and received, when you download a copy of your data.
