Record a reel on Instagram
You can record and edit videos up to 90 seconds with Instagram Reels. You can add effects and music to your reel or use your own original audio.
Reels isn’t currently available to everyone. Some accounts may be able to see reels, but won't be able to record them.
Record your reel
  1. Tap create new at the bottom or swipe right anywhere in Feed.
  2. Tap REEL at the bottom.
  3. Tap and hold add to record a clip or tap it to start recording and tap it again to end the clip. You can also tap your camera roll in the bottom left to add a video from your camera roll.
  4. Use the reels tool menu on the left to do things like add audio, effects and layouts to your reel or change how you record your reel.
  5. Tap Next in the bottom right. At the top you can tap:
    • audio to add audio.
    • text to add text.
    • stickers to add stickers.
    • effects to add an effect.
    • download to download your reel to your device.
  6. Tap Edit video in the bottom left. From here you can edit your reel on a timeline that shows when things appear in your reel. You’ll see anything you’ve added like text, stickers and music on a timeline along with clips in your reel. You can scroll through the timeline to see the whole reel. Tap on text or stickers to edit them, or tap and hold them to move them to another part of your reel. Tap on the music to replace it.
  7. You can also Reorder in the bottom left to rearrange your clips. Tap and drag a clip to move it, then tap Done when you’re finished. You can use the trimmers on each clip to change their length.
  8. Tap Story arrow to confirm story before sharing in the top right. From here you can tap Edit cover to select a new cover photo or add one from your device. You can also do things like write a caption, add a location or fundraiser, or share your reel to Facebook.
  9. Tap Next in the bottom right, then tap Share.
Note that you can record one or multiple clips that add up to 90 seconds. The progress bar at the top shows how long you’ve recorded. If you share your reel to Explore, it can also be seen on the Reels section of your profile.
