Manage reels and video captions on Instagram
Captions on reels and videos may not be available to everyone.
When captions are on, the speech in a reel or video is automatically written out as text at the bottom. Instagram uses speech recognition technology to automatically create captions.
If captions are available, they’ll appear when you watch reels and videos in your feed. You can change this setting at any time. Note that the default language for captions depends on the language settings for your device.
Watch a reel or video with captions
You can adjust captions for reels and videos either from a post or from your settings within the Instagram app for Android and iPhone.
To manage captions from a post:
  1. Tap the caption at the bottom of the video or reel.
  2. Tap switch off or switch on next to Captions to turn them on or off.
To manage captions from your settings:
  1. Tap profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap more options in the top right.
  3. Below Your app and media, tap Accessibility.
  4. Tap Captions, then tap switch off or switch on next to Captions to turn them on or off.
Note that captions will show even if the volume on your device is on. Captions for video ads in your feed cannot be adjusted.
Share a reel or video with captions
You can manage captions for your own video post before or after sharing it.
To manage captions before sharing a video post:
  1. Before sharing a reel, tap Advanced Settings.
  2. Scroll to Accessibility and tap switch off or switch on next to Show Captions to turn it on or off.
To manage captions for a video post you already shared:
  1. Tap more actions at the bottom of the video.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap Advanced settings, then tap switch off or switch on next to Show captions to turn them on or off.
Keep in mind that if captions are available for posts you share, they’ll automatically show unless you turn them off.
