When people message you on Instagram about buying your products, you can request a payment and get paid through chat in Instagram Direct.
Please note that you must be at least 18 years old to sell in Instagram Direct.
Get started with payments in Instagram Direct
To begin accepting payments in chat:
- Visit your Instagram professional dashboard.
- Tap Get paid in chat.
Request a payment in Instagram Direct
Once you’ve set up payments in chat, you can create payment requests. To create a payment request when you’re chatting with a buyer:

- Navigate to the message with the buyer.
- Tap
in the message. - Enter the following information:
- The total price for the payment request, including, if applicable, the cost of shipping and taxes.
- A detailed description of the product. The buyer will be able to see how you’ve described the item. Detailed and thorough descriptions may help avoid Purchase Protection claims.
- Tap Send to send your payment request to the buyer.
Transaction limits
To help protect buyers from fraud, there are limits on the amount of money you can request in Instagram Direct:
- Individual payment requests can’t exceed $750.
- The total amount of requests sent in any 7-day period can’t exceed $2250.

What happens after I send a payment request?
After you send a payment request, the buyer can fulfill your request in one of two ways:
- Using Instagram payments in chat: Your buyer can use a debit card, credit card, or PayPal through Meta Pay to complete the payment request you sent them in chat. You’ll receive confirmation your buyer has paid and be able to see their shipping details.
- Using a third-party payment method: If you or your buyer prefer, payment can also be made using a third-party payment method or cash. If your buyer pays this way, you can still tap Mark as paid on the request. This can help with order management.

When will I get paid for items I've sold?
Once you’ve mailed the order, tap
Mark as sent on the payment within 21 days. You must tap
Mark as sent to
get paid. You’ll typically receive funds in your bank account in 3-5 business days.

How do I cancel a payment request?
If your buyer doesn’t pay, or you need to cancel the payment request for another reason, you can cancel the payment request by tapping Cancel on the request.

Where can I see my past payment requests?
To see a summary of payment requests you’ve sent to buyers:

What kind of Instagram account do I need to sell in Instagram Direct?
Qualified users who have set up business accounts or creator accounts on Instagram can accept payments in Instagram Direct. You can’t accept payments in Instagram Direct if you have a personal account. Learn more about

If you're eligible to sell in Instagram Direct through your business or creator account and you switch your business or creator account to a personal account, you’ll lose the ability to sell in Instagram Direct. You’ll still have access to your transaction history and payout screen, and will be able to complete any outstanding transactions that were created prior to changing account types. You won’t be able to create new orders.
If you’re eligible to sell in Instagram Direct and you switch your personal account to a business or creator account, you may not be able to accept payments in Instagram Direct for up to four hours.

What personal information do I have to provide to sell in Instagram Direct?
You’ll be asked to provide the following information:
- Legal name
- Date of birth
- Address
- Phone number
- Email address
- Social Security number
- Bank account details
This information is required by our payment partner, PayPal. This information won’t be visible or shared on Instagram.
