Why am I being asked to add my email address or mobile phone number to my Instagram account and how will they be used?
When you add an email address or phone number to your Instagram account, we may use them for purposes like:
- Helping you log in. If you forget your password, you'll need an updated mobile number or email address to reset it.
- Sending you text messages (SMS) or email notifications for updates about recent activity on your account, promotions and account safety. Text message (SMS) and email notifications can help keep your account safe through opt-in features like two-factor authentication for mobile numbers and email alerts for account information changes. Note: You can opt out of all text message (SMS) and email notifications at any time (except those relating to your account’s security).
- Connecting you to other people and content on our platforms, including using your contacts to recommend accounts to follow.
- Providing and improving ads for you and others. We match your contact information with information we get from other sources (example: when you make a purchase after seeing an ad on Instagram). This helps us improve our ads services for everyone within the Instagram community.
You may also see a mobile number or email suggested for you when we ask you to add your contact information. Keep in mind, the mobile number or email we’re asking you to confirm will only be added to your account if you choose to add it.
We may ask you to confirm your mobile phone number or email address because:
- You previously added your mobile number or email, but did not finish confirming it.
- Time has passed since you last added or updated your mobile number or email.
- We’ve received information from your device that helps us suggest the mobile number or email connected to that device.
- You haven’t added one yet, and we want to show you how.
Note: Mobile numbers and email addresses are always private on your Instagram accounts. You can remove a confirmed mobile number or email address from your account at any time, as long as you still have at least one confirmed mobile number or email address on your account.
