What is a legal restriction on access to content?
A legal restriction on access to content means that Instagram has made content unavailable based on local law. When governments believe that something on the internet violates their laws, they may contact companies like Instagram and ask us to restrict access to that content. Similarly, we may receive orders to restrict content from courts in the countries where we provide service, or requests from non-government entities, such as members of the Instagram community, NGOs and charities. If, after careful legal review, we determine that the content is illegal under local law, then we make it unavailable in the relevant country or territory. For example, Holocaust denial is illegal in Germany so if it is reported to us we will restrict this content for people in Germany.
In addition, in certain circumstances, we may restrict access to content identified as unlawful that is brought to our attention by individuals and companies. This may include content that is a false assertion of fact and injures your reputation under the law. You or your legal representative may report this content to Instagram.
