Boost an Instagram story
If you're based in or intend to target audiences in the US and want to create an ad campaign that relates to credit, employment, housing, social issues or political ads, you must choose the category that best describes your ads from the Special Ad Category dropdown menu.
Starting February 2024, an Apple service charge of 30% of your total payment amount, before any applicable taxes, may apply when you boost in the Instagram iOS app. This fee is retained by Apple, not Instagram or Meta. Learn more about avoiding Apple service charges when boosting on Instagram.
You can boost Instagram stories that are either active, have been featured in your highlights or archived to turn them into ads to help your brand reach new audiences. You can also learn how to boost an Instagram post or boost an Instagram reel.
Note: When you boost a post on the Facebook or Instagram iOS apps, you’ll need to pay with prepaid funds. Prepaid funds added through the iOS apps will be charged through Apple, which retains a service fee on your total ad payment before applicable taxes. Applicable taxes and Apple service fees are not kept by Meta.
Boost an Instagram story
To boost an active Instagram story:
  1. Go to your profile.
  2. Tap your profile picture to access your story.
  3. At the bottom of the story's image or video, tap More.
  4. Tap Boost story.
  5. Fill in the details of your ad, including goal, audience, budget and duration. Tap Next (iOS) or (Android) once you've completed these details.
  6. To complete your ad, tap Boost post.
You'll receive a notification after you submit an ad for review, when it's getting reviewed, when it's approved or disapproved and when the campaign ends.
Stories that are boosted will run for as long as you set the duration for. While the active story on your profile will expire after 24 hours, the boosted story can still run as an ad for the duration you set. You can also boost archived and highlighted stories.
Eligibility requirements for interactive elements on boosted Instagram stories
  • For most ads: You can use one of the following interactive elements: location sticker, hashtag sticker, polling sticker, tappable text, countdown sticker, and @mention sticker for the account you’re boosting from. You can mention up to 5 people in your boosted story.
  • For partnership ads: You can use up to five of the following interactive elements: location sticker, hashtag sticker, polling sticker, countdown sticker, tappable text and @mention sticker for the creator or the business partner's profile.
Note:
  • Avoid using emojis, GIFs, copyrighted music, link stickers and more complex creative tools in boosted stories.
  • Only effects made by Instagram are eligible in boosted stories.
  • You can add a link in your organic story. However, you can only add a link that appears as an action button in boosted stories during ad creation. Boosted stories support a default action button, placed at the bottom of your ad. Action buttons can only be added to stories that do not already include an existing sticker or any other interactive elements. To optimize ad creative for action buttons in boosted stories, follow ad specification guidance for stories and leave roughly 14% of the top and 20% of the bottom of your creative free from text, logos or other key creative elements to prevent the action button from covering them. You can also adjust the default position of the action button for ads in the 9:16 ratio in the ad creative section in Meta Ads Manager.
