Restore end-to-end encrypted messages with a one-time code
This feature is only available from the Instagram app for Android and iPhone.
End-to-end encryption adds extra security and protection to your messages and calls in a chat so that only you and whoever you're talking to can see, hear or read them.
If you backed up your messages to secure storage from Instagram, you can restore them on a new device with a PIN. If you don’t know your PIN, you can use a one-time code on another device.
How to use a one-time code
  1. Open Instagram on your new device.
  2. Tap send or messenger in the top right of Feed.
  3. Next, tap Use a one-time code instead when asked to enter your PIN. This will send a one-time code to your other devices where you recently used Instagram.
  4. Open Instagram on a device where you recently used Instagram to see your one-time code.
  5. On your new device, open Instagram and follow the instructions to enter your one-time code.
You can learn more about end-to-end encryption and how it works on the Instagram Help Center.
