Mentions
Mention other Instagrammers on a post and they'll be notified in their Activity.
To mention someone, type @ followed immediately by their username (ex: "great photo, @shayne!"). Don't include a space between @ and the username.
When you mention someone, they'll get a notification in their Activity feed letting them know.
You'll receive a notification in Activity when someone:
- Likes or comments on one of your posts
- Mentions you in a comment (ex: "great photo, @shayne!")
- Starts following you or requests to follow you
Yes, someone you blocked can mention your username on Instagram, but this mention won't appear in your Activity. If you block someone and then change your username, they won't be able to mention you unless they know your new username.
If someone with a private profile mentions someone who isn't one of their approved followers on a photo or video, the person mentioned will be able to see part of the comment in the You section of Activity. They may get a push notification (if their notification settings are turned on), but won't be able to navigate through to the private photo or video.
If someone with a private profile leaves a comment on a photo that a public Instagrammer uploaded, their comment will be visible and their username will be clickable below that photo.
If you send a photo/video to a specific group of people with Instagram Direct, only those people can see the comments or mentions associated with that photo/video.
Reply to someone in a comment thread by mentioning them in your comment. They'll get a notification in their activity feed to view the comment. To reply to someone:
iOS
- Tap
- Swipe your finger to the left over the comment you'd like to reply to
- Tap
and enter your reply
On iOS, you can also press and hold a username in any comment thread to automatically start a comment with that username already mentioned.
Android
- Tap
- Tap the comment or comments you'd like to reply to
- Tap
and enter your reply
