Instagram Settings

You can log out of the Instagram app or Instagram on the web by going to your profile.

Instagram on the Web

  1. Tap or click in the top right
  2. Tap or click to the right of your username then select Log Out

iPhone or Android

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Tap (iPhone) or (Android) in the top right
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Log Out

Two-factor authentication is a security feature. When two-factor authentication is on, every time you log into Instagram from an unknown device you'll be asked to enter an SMS security code or backup code in addition to your username and password.

To turn two-factor authentication on:

  1. Go to your profile and tap (iPhone) or (Android) in the top right
  2. Scroll down and tap Two-Factor Authentication
  3. Tap Require Security Code to move to the on position
  4. If your account doesn't have a confirmed phone number, you'll be asked to enter a phone number. After entering the phone number, tap Next (iPhone) or (Android).
  5. A code will be sent to you. Enter that code and tap Next.

Note: After you've turned on two-factor authentication, you'll be able to access backup codes for your account. If you don't receive an SMS security code during the two-factor authentication login process, you'll still be able to log into your account by using a backup code. Learn more about backup codes.

To turn two-factor authentication off:

  1. Go to your profile and tap (iPhone) or (Android) in the top right
  2. Scroll down and tap Two-Factor Authentication
  3. Tap Require Security Code to move to the off position
  4. Then tap Turn Off at the bottom of the message that appears

Keep in mind that you must have a confirmed telephone number for your Instagram account to use two-factor authentication. When you enter a telephone number to turn on two-factor authentication it will become the confirmed number for your account.

When two-factor authentication is on, every time you log into Instagram from an unknown device you'll be asked to enter a backup code or an SMS security code in addition to your username and password.

If an SMS security code can't be sent due to connectivity or SMS delivery issues, you'll still be able to complete the two-step authentication process with a backup code.

To get a list of backup codes for your account:

  1. Go to your profile and tap (iOS) or (Android) in the top-right corner
  2. Scroll down and tap Two-Factor Authentication
  3. Tap Get Backup Codes

Keep in mind that you'll need to add a phone number to your account to turn on this feature.

To cancel your current backup codes and get a new set of codes:

  1. Go to your profile and tap (iOS) or (Android) in the top-right corner
  2. Scroll down and tap Two-Factor Authentication
  3. Tap Get Backup Codes
  4. Tap Get new codes

Keep in mind that you must be logged in to your Instagram account to access the list of backup codes or get a new list. You should copy the codes to your clipboard, take a screenshot of them or save them in some other way so that they're available when you log into Instagram

Instagram saves searches in Search & Explore to make it easier for you to find your favorite accounts and hashtags again quickly. To clear your search history:

  1. Tap to go to your profile.
  2. Tap (iPhone) or (Android) in the top right.
  3. Below Account, tap Search History.
  4. Tap Clear Search History.

Keep in mind that clearing your search history is temporary, and that searches you clear may reappear in your history after you search for them again.

You can also hide individual accounts to permanently remove them from your search history and keep them from reappearing:

  1. Tap and then tap the search bar at the top of the screen
  2. Tap Top or People, then tap and hold the accounts you'd like to hide from your history
  3. Tap Hide

We may send notifications for several reasons, including:

  • Someone liking or commenting on one of your photos or videos
  • Someone mentioning you in a comment

You can adjust your push notifications from your account settings.

You can choose to get push notifications when someone likes or comments on your post. If you have notifications turned on, you can also choose accounts that you want to receive notifications about.

To turn push notifications on or off:

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Tap (iPhone) or (Android) > Push Notification Settings
  3. Adjust your settings

To receive notifications about specific accounts that you follow, go to the profile or that account and tap > Turn on Post Notifications.

If you've added multiple Instagram accounts, you may get push notifications from any account that has them turned on. This depends on when you last logged in and the number of devices that are logged in to an account.

To quickly see the number of notifications for each account you've added, go to your profile and tap your username at the top.

You're in control of your data on Instagram. You can view your account data or download a copy of your data on Instagram at any time.

Reviewing your data on Instagram

From Instagram on the Web:
  1. Go to your profile and click
  2. Click Privacy & Security
  3. Scroll down to Account Data and click View Account Data
  4. To review a specific type of data, click View All.

From iOS or Android:

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Tap (iPhone) or (Android) in the top right
  3. Scroll down and tap Account Data
  4. Tap Request Download
  5. To review a specific type of data, tap View All.

Downloading a copy of your data on Instagram

If you want a copy of everything you've shared on Instagram, you can request a download of your data in a machine readable (JSON) format. You'll need your Instagram account password to request this information. Learn more if you've forgotten your password or can't log in.

From Instagram on the Web:

  1. Go to your profile and click
  2. Click Privacy & Security
  3. Scroll down to Data Download and click Request Download
  4. Enter the email address where you'd like to receive a link to your data and enter your Instagram account password
  5. You'll soon receive an email titled Your Instagram Data with a link to your data. Click Download Data and follow the instructions to finish downloading your information.

From iOS or Android:

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Tap (iPhone) or (Android) in the top right
  3. Scroll down and tap Data Download
  4. Tap Request Download
  5. Enter the email address where you'd like to receive a link to your data and tap Request Download
  6. Enter your Instagram account password
  7. You'll soon receive an email titled Your Instagram Data with a link to your data. Click Download Data and follow the instructions to finish downloading your information.
Note: It may take up to 48 hours for us to email you a download link. Some data you have deleted may be stored temporarily for safety and security purposes, but will not appear when you access or download your data.

Phone Settings

You can save photos that you've filtered and edited on Instagram to your phone. To save your photos to your phone:

  1. Go to your profile and tap (iOS) or (Android) in the top right
  2. Tap to next to Save Original Photos

When you have Save Original Photos turned on, every photo you post on Instagram will also be saved to your phone's library.

Note: People using Instagram on Android may see a delay in photos appearing in their phone’s Instagram photo album.

If you've chosen to save your Instagram photos to your phone, the high-resolution versions of your photos are automatically saved to your phone after you share the photo on Instagram.

Photos are saved to your phone in the highest resolution size possible. The maximum resolution is 2048x2048 on iOS and varies on Android.

Android

Image resolution capabilities are different for each phone.

Apple iOS

Photo resolution for photos taken within the Instagram app (not from your phone's library):

  • 2048x2048 on the iPhone 4s and later
  • 1936x1936 on the iPhone 4
  • 1536x1536 on the iPhone 3GS

Keep in mind that photos from your phone's library (not taken within the Instagram app) may save at a lower resolution.

To change the language you use in the Instagram app, you can adjust your language settings:

  1. Go to your profile and tap (iOS) or (Android) in the top right
  2. Scroll down and tap Language (below Settings)
  3. Choose the language you'd like to use

To adjust your device's Android settings for Instagram:

  1. Open your phone's settings
  2. Tap Apps
  3. Scroll down and tap Instagram

You'll see the option to uninstall the app and remove Instagram from your phone. You can also clear your cache and data (reset all of the memory on your phone), adjust notifications, and change the default setting for the app.

To turn location services on or off:

  1. Leave the Instagram app and go to your iPhone's Settings
  2. Tap Privacy > Location Services
  3. Scroll down and tap Instagram
  4. Select Never or While Using the App to choose location access

Instagram's default setting for location is off, but you can turn location on whenever you post a photo. You'll choose whether or not to allow Instagram access to your location.
