How to verify that you're talking to the right people in an end-to-end encrypted Instagram Direct chat
End-to-end encryption adds extra security and protection to your messages and calls in a chat so that only you and whoever you're talking to can see, hear or read them.
You and whoever you’re talking to in an end-to-end encrypted chat are the only people who have unique and matching device keys that can access the conversation. You can see your device keys on any device where you're using end-to-end encrypted chats.
How to find your end-to-end encryption keys
Computer
  1. Open an end-to-end encrypted chat with someone.
  2. Click in the top right to open the information panel.
  3. Click End-to-end encryption keys.
Android or iPhone
  1. From Messenger, open an end-to-end encrypted chat with someone.
  2. Tap the conversation's name at the top to view the Details page.
  3. Tap End-to-end encryption keys
How to verify an encrypted conversation
To verify the conversation is end-to-end encrypted, compare the keys under your friend's name with the keys they see on their device. If the keys match, you know the conversation is end-to-end encrypted between these devices.
The safest way to compare keys is in person, but you can also read the numbers out loud over an audio or video call.
Example: On your device, your friend Anna's device keys are 123. On Anna's device, her keys should also be 123.
